NFL lockout puts rookie free agents in limbo

Passed over in the NFL draft, offensive lineman Kris O'Dowd is determined to show pro scouts he can handle a rush.
Soon, he'll get his chance.
The former USC center, along with a few hundred other undrafted hopefuls, will wind up signing with an NFL team shortly after a new collective bargaining agreement is in place and the lockout is lifted. In a normal year, O'Dowd surely would have hooked on with a team already. But because of the lockout, there wasn't the traditional post-draft flurry of signings, the frantic grab for rookie free agents who didn't hear their names

Don Zimmer, Rays senior adviser and ex-Yankees bench coach, ranks Derek Jeter among the best

Don Zimmer insists it's just coincidence, but his first road trip of the season with the Rays just happened to line up with Derek Jeter's final push to 3,000 hits in the Bronx.
The lovable former Yankee bench coach always had what he termed "a special relationship" with Jeter, and Zim not surprisingly remains one of The Captain's biggest supporters.
"I get a kick out of people saying he's slowing up, he should be hitting ninth. That's a lot of bull," Zimmer said in the visiting dugout before Thursday night's game. "Sure, he's slowed up a step. Who wouldn't slow

Ailing Nadal joins Federer, Murray Djokovic in last eight

Rafael Nadal felt something “crush” in his left foot, and the intense pain immediately made him worry that it might be broken.
And then, as he limped along between first-set points in the fourth round at Wimbledon, came an idea just as scary to contemplate: What if he needed to quit?
“I thought I wouldn't be able to continue playing,” the defending champion and top-seeded Nadal said Monday night. “That's the truth. I'm not lying.”
After pulling out a 7-6 (6), 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4 victory over 2009 U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro, Nadal said he would get

Wizards introduce 1st-round pick Jan Vesely

WASHINGTON—Jan Vesely is right where he wanted to be all along.
The 6-foot-11 forward from the Czech Republic was the sixth overall pick by Washington in the NBA draft last Thursday -- and he couldn't have been more thrilled during an introductory news conference.
"I'm happy to be here," Vesely said Monday. "I hoped that Washington picked me."
He sure showed it, too on draft night. Vesely made some headlines when his name was announced and he passionately kissed his girlfriend Eva on television.
"All the news, nobody knows about the picks on draft night," said Vesely, who wasn't embarrassed

Planet Sport: LeBron James feels the heat after losing NBA Finals

Another tough week for LeBron James as Miami Heat lost the NBA Championship to the Dallas Mavericks, and the backlash that has been bubbling along nicely since "The Decision" – his highly publicised move to join the Heat from the Cleveland Cavaliers – finally came to the boil as everyone outside Miami positively revelled in the sheer volume of schadenfreude James had generated in one short year.
Immediately popular with a wide range of the US press was re-running the footage from the Heat welcome party for James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, who were to form the new Miami

Boston?s powerless power play

It may be hockey’s dumbest joke, but it’s still the best way to describe the power play of the Boston Bruins.
They should decline the next penalty called against the other side.
In Game 1 of the Stanley Cup final Wednesday night, it was six whiffs on six tries, including one four-minute power play at the start the game and a two-man advantage that ran more than a minute and a half early in the second period. They had nothing to show but a Mark Recchi shot that grazed the side of the Vancouver Canucks’ post.
As the second-dumbest hockey

Bulls' Noah fined $50K for anti-gay slur

Chicago Bulls centre Joakim Noah was fined $50,000 US on Monday for directing an anti-gay slur at a fan during Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals, and vowed to learn from the incident.
The NBA released its decision hours after speaking with Noah, saying the fine was "for using a derogatory and offensive term from the bench."
The fine is only half of what Los Angeles Lakers' star Kobe Bryant was assessed for shouting the same slur toward a referee last month, and the league said the discrepancy was because the sanction against Bryant was based on both what

Deron Williams to rest injured wrist for at least 3 games; shorthanded Nets fall to Wizards, 98-92

WASHINGTON - Deron Williams doesn't know if he'll play again this season, but he knows he's sitting for at least the next four days.
After a meeting Saturday between GM Billy King, coach Avery Johnson and Williams, the Nets made a "collective decision" to rest the point guard and his strained wrist for three games, including Sunday's 98-92 loss to the Wizards.
But the timeline is flexible. Both Johnson and Williams said it could be extended until the end of the season.
"If we say we're going to shut him down for the rest of the year and he wants
